In a career that began during the pre-war era and was disrupted by the outbreak of World War Two, he still registered over 400 goals in approximately 300 club games for a host of Polish teams. During the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome he found the net five times during a 6-1 win against Tunisia. He remains the most prolific Polish First Division scorer with 186 goals for Legia Warsaw and Gornik Zabrze.
